Chapter Eight
Goliathâs benefactor was much younger then he had remembered, and he had a lean and hungry look that belied the money he had already deposited in Travisâ safe. He was standing quietly at the front of the theater when the three men came around the corner.
âDid you enjoy the show?â Goliath asked.
âIâm afraid I missed it,â the man said, and Goliath sensed a nervousness in his voice that puzzled him.
âI believe you said your name was Matt Nichols,â Goliath offered, and the man nodded.
âWould you care to drop by the bar, or should we get out of here before the crowds arrive?â he asked.
Matt seemed greatly relieved at that last suggestion. âLetâs get going,â he blurted.
Goliath summoned a chariot and the two men were driven the three short blocks to Mattâs mansion. And it was a mansion, one of the best restorations in the colony. Matt led Goliath to a patio bar and asked if he could mix him a drink.
âWhisky sour, if I have a choice,â Goliath replied.
âAnything you like,â Matt answered quickly and went to work.
Goliath studied his too sensitive face and knew something was very wrong. Goliath had encountered no sign of nervousness or unrest in the village since he had arrived. What could possibly make a man ill at ease in a place like this escaped Goliathâunless he was just over-anxious to get into bed. But Goliath instinctively knew that wasnât the case... something else was eating at his host and after Matt had made them each a drink they moved to a pair of easy chairs at the edge of the patio.
It was a warm, balmy night and the stars were brilliant against the sky; Goliath thought how great it would be to live like this forever. Mattâs nervousness failed to dissipate and he barely spoke as they sipped their drinks.
âMatt,â Goliath finally said, âthereâs something bothering you. Would you like to tell me about it?â
Matt froze as though heâd been given an electric shock. âNo... no,â he began, but then his entire countenance crumbled as Goliath watched, and the large, sensitive eyes looked dangerously close to tears. Goliath leaned in close and took his hand.
âWhatâs the matter, Matt?â he asked gently.
âIâoh, God... this sounds stupid,â he moaned. Matt then took a deep breath and looked into Goliathâs eyes. âIâve never had a man before,â he said, the words tumbling out of him.
Now it was Goliathâs turn to register shock: âMy God! What are you doing here?â he asked. âHow have you kept from getting raped?â He laughed, all sorts of second thoughts running through his brain.
âI wanted... well, Iâve had this urge for a long time. Iâm married and Iâve got kids, but I just needed to... well, I heard about this and decided it was the way to find out.â He was running whole sentences together in a blur now. âI got here but I just couldnât ask anyone... oh, HELL!â
Goliath quickly stood up and pulled Matt to his feet.
âWell, if you lack the courage to experiment, I donât.
